Up Close & Personal with Freek Staps

Freek Staps, known for his in-depth articles in the NRC Handelsblad newspaper, spoke at length with members of the Dutch New York community about the human face of the American recession. Seventeen DYPs attended the event at NY Vintners in Tribeca, a well-known local wine specialist. The large square table prompted lively interaction between newly-arrived NYC Dutchmen and –women with their more seasoned compatriots, especially focusing on the Dutch view of the American recession. Freek told of his experiences travelling the country while researching for his new book “Meer Meer Minder”, his stories ranging from quirky to downright depressing. After enjoying the fresh pastas, fish, and chocolate desserts, neither consensus nor a clear conclusion was not found by the DYP group. However, food for thought and continued discussions was provided, as is the case whenever you bring a group of Dutchmen and –women together. It was a thoroughly enjoyable night.
