![]() | Summer time, Heineken on the Terrace timeMany Dutch people and their international friends and colleagues gathered Thursday 22 July to enjoy a hot and steamy NY summer evening on the rooftop of the Netherland club. With a cool Heineken in the hand, a breeze coming in from the terrace, people had the opportunity to see a live performance of Dutch Breakdance duo " Boudewijn en Philp" aka "The Soul Warriors". Never again will people say that the Dutch can't dance.

![]() | Up Close & Personal with Gilian Schrofer
On March 18th, about 25 artistically-minded (or –challenged, depending on your viewpoint) gathered to get the inside scoop on design from Gilian Schrofer, the Founder and Creative Director of Concern. At the artists’ food haven Bottino, we were entertained and educated on the finer aspects of architecture, interior design, and cooking. Gilian and his team have worked on cutting-edge projects such as the MustSee cinema in Delft, the renovation of Hotel de L’Europe, the new offices of The Lost Boys, the Supper Club, Laundry Industry and, most recently, the Think Space in the Crowne Plaza in London and the hospitality spaces in Het Nieuwe Stedelijk Museum. Bottino’s food was excellent, and the wines even better. As the night drew to a close and the restaurant emptied out, an impromptu after-party was held on Pam’s rooftop (Gilian’s impresario in NY) where Gilian delved deeper into some “how not to design” examples such as London Zoo and Droog in Milan. As validated by everyone’s hangover the next day, it was a great evening…..

![]() | Up Close & Personal with Freek StapsFreek Staps, known for his in-depth articles in the NRC Handelsblad newspaper, spoke at length with members of the Dutch New York community about the human face of the American recession. Seventeen DYPs attended the event at NY Vintners in Tribeca, a well-known local wine specialist. The large square table prompted lively interaction between newly-arrived NYC Dutchmen and –women with their more seasoned compatriots, especially focusing on the Dutch view of the American recession. Freek told of his experiences travelling the country while researching for his new book “Meer Meer Minder”, his stories ranging from quirky to downright depressing. After enjoying the fresh pastas, fish, and chocolate desserts, neither consensus nor a clear conclusion was not found by the DYP group. However, food for thought and continued discussions was provided, as is the case whenever you bring a group of Dutchmen and –women together. It was a thoroughly enjoyable night. |
